For over forty years, Brian Auger has been a musician’s musician. Jazz pianist, bandleader, session man, Hammond B3 innovator, and key player in the rise of jazz/rock fusion, Brian has done it all and then some. An incredible gentleman with one of the most varied careers in music, he has incorporated jazz, early British pop, R&B, soul and rock into an incredible catalog that has won him legions of fans all over the world.
With the first band ¨Steampacket¨ with Vic Briggs, Rod Stewart and a young Julie Driscoll, the road to the history of the soul-pop-jazz music was opened.
In fact, what Stampacket did, was to took Auger out of the jazz world and made him play through such a variety of material.
This was the idea of the most important band of his carrer, Brian Auger Trinity, a combination of blues, Motown and Messengers.
The result of this idea was to get right into the major Jazz Festivals - Montreux Jazz Festival as the headliner, Berlin Jazz Festival, both in 1968 (no rock-jazz band had ever done that, these were pure jazz festivals).
The same year Brian and Julie’s hit "This Wheel’s On Fire" went to number one in England and brough the tune to hit status all over Europe as well as the U.K, and with Carnaby Street in full gear, Julie’s voice and vibe made her one of the poster girls of the mod years.
After "This Wheel’s On Fire" , the list of hits did not stop, we have mention ¨Streetnoise´ considered one of the Trinity’s finest albums, and contains a number of stand out tracks including a take on Richie Havens’ "Indian Rope Man," Miles Davis’ "All Blues," Laura Nyro’s "Save the Country" and "I’ve Got Life" from the musical Hair.
After Trinity, Brian creates his Oblivion Express on 1971 and hit Closer To It and Straight Ahead, landing rigth on the R&B and jazz charts. The Express shared the stage with Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin and others, bridging rock, jazz and R&B genres, and sometimes did straight R&B gigs. ".
From those years Oblivion Express has been on the road with differents line ups.
In the mid to late 1990’s, Auger formed his own family version of the Oblivion Express, with his children Karma on drums and Savannah performing, as the lead vocalist.
There is no one on the planet quite like this amazing guy who still comes to a gig ready to play, and not just walk through a set of oldies, but inject his music with the fire and passion that only a true original brings to the bandstand or studio. Brian Auger is a true original, and we are fortunate to have him and his musical legacy as a vibrant part of today’s music scene.
